Noovaria makes massage tools for the home. Nothing here needs an appointment, a therapist, or an hour you do not have — which is the only reason any of it gets used more than twice.
The idea
A habit beats a treatment
A professional massage costs about ninety dollars and takes about ninety minutes. It is worth it. It is also the reason most people who could use one have had two in the last decade — the barrier is not the money on its own, it is the booking, the driving, the hour, and the explaining.
So we build for a different moment: quarter to nine on a weeknight, shoes off, the day still sitting in your shoulders. Ten minutes with something that was already within reach. Done often, that turns out to matter more than done perfectly.
Anything you have to go and fetch is something you stop using by March.
Where it comes from
Upkeep, not repair
We took the idea from the Japanese anma tradition, where massage was not something you did because something had gone wrong. It was upkeep — brief, frequent, unremarkable, part of the ordinary running of a body that works for a living.
Shiatsu, the practice that grew out of anma in the early 1900s, means finger pressure. That is all any of our tools do: they knead, they press, they warm. We are not a Japanese company and we do not pretend to be one — we borrowed a good idea and we would rather say so.
Anma takes shape in Edo-period Japan, practised largely by blind practitioners: kneading and pressing by hand, as maintenance rather than medicine.
Tamai Tempaku sets anma beside Western anatomy; Tokujiro Namikoshi opens the Japan Shiatsu Institute in Tokyo.
Japan's health ministry licenses the school, and then recognises shiatsu as a discipline distinct from anma and from Western massage.
How we choose
Three things have to be true
We are a small shop and we would rather carry twelve things we can describe honestly than two hundred we cannot. Everything we list has to clear the same three bars.
One job
A tool for the neck, or the feet, or the back — not a machine that claims all three and does none of them properly.
Lives within reach
If it is awkward to store, heavy to lift or slow to set up, it ends up in a cupboard. We would rather sell you something you keep on the couch.
Describable in plain numbers
Watts, degrees, minutes, grams, what is in the box. If the only thing a supplier can tell us about a product is how it makes you feel, we pass.
